A Letter to the Alumni of HBU all over the world

Dear Alumni:
    We are celebrating the eightieth anniversary of HBU in the first fall of 21st century. Since its foundation in 1921, HBU has undergone successive changes in its names—it was called Tianjin Industrial and Commercial College. Tianjin Industrial & Commercial Institute, Jinggu College, Tianjing Normal School, Tanjin Normal University in different times in 1960, it was Baoding, a city famous for its historical and cultural associations in Hebei Province in 1970. Since then, it has been the only key comprehensive university appointed by Hebei province .
    In the last eighty years, owing to the successive efforts of the staff, HBU now offers comprehensive courses covering ten categories, including philosophy, economics, law,education, literature, history, science, engineering, medical science and management. The 20 colleges of HBU offer 57 undergraduate courses, 44 graduate courses and 6 doctorate courses. This year we have 18,235 enrollments, including 81 doctors and 1100 graduates.
    Due to its constant efforts for eighty years, HBU has attracted a large number of accomplished scholars. Currently we have a teaching staff of 2,146, including 647 professors and associate professors, provincially appointed experts, 29 experts enjoying special state allowances granted by the State Council, 8 young experts in social science sponsored by the province, and 12 provincially cross-century talents. Profs. Yin Xiangchu and Song Daxiang, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, are noted scholars in our country; while senior Profs. Qi Xia, Teng Dachun, and Sun Zhizhong are holding important places in their own academic field.
    Ever since its foundation, HBU has been contributing tremendously to the building of the local economy, the development of society and the advancement of technology. In recent years there have been more and more extensive academic exchanges between HBU and other universities at home and abroad. We have established steady exchange programs with sister universities in the U.S. France, Japan, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and some other countries.
    In the last 80 years, “seek truth from practice, be diligent in study and honest in conduct” has always been our guiding principle for the cultivation of students under which tens of thousands of talents have been trained. Quite a few of them have become accomplished experts, scholars, celebrities, or senior leaders in the Party or government. Now HBU is known as the cradle of administrative officials for the province, the base of science and technology and the source of talents in humanities and social science.
    In order to adapt to the market economy and carry out the strategy of developing Hebei Province by science and education, HBU defines its principle for the school as “having our feet firmly planted in Hebei Province, keeping in view the nation and opening our eyes to the world”. Subsequently, we are filled with the great aspiration to build a nationally first-class university by leaps and bounds. In order to achieve this goal, over 1,500 acres of land has been newly purchased, hundreds of millions are being invested and a new and modernized campus in accordance with the modern theories of higher education is under construction.
    My dear alumni, every step our university makes is a result of your love and support. For so many years, you always have remembered her and expressed your love and support by all means. Your university has always been grateful for everything you have done.Our university is holding a grand ceremony to celebrate her eightieth anniversary on October 18th 2001. Friends from various circles and numerous alumni are coming to Hebei University for the occasion. As a milestone in linking past and future, the eightieth anniversary is considered as a great event in the history of Hebei University and a happy event for alumni at home and abroad. During the celebration, we are going to summarize our experiences of running this school and our historical lessons, display some of the latest achievements in developing the university, extend our influence both nationally and internationally, promote teaching and research and increase our overall strength to realize our goal of building a nationally first-class University.
    Every leaf concerns the tree, and every little thing you do is an embodiment of your love. So my dear alumni, as the preparation for the celebration is well on its way, we hope that you will support us with great enthusiasm, as you have always done.
    It takes years to realize a dream, and it takes our united efforts to build a future. We firmly believe that with the concern of the party and the state, under the leadership of the provincial Party committee and the provincial government, with the support of people from all walks of life, and with the united efforts of all graduates, our university is sure to shine in the new century.
    Her future is sure to be more wonderful than ever before.

The embodiment of democratic centralism & the fruit of collective wisdom

    Notice of the final version of the motto: spirit, song, and badge of Hebei University.

    The university motto, spirit, song, and badge of Hebei University are the permanent symbols and the incarnation of the spirit of Hebei University bearing practical and historical significances in shaping the image of Hebei University. The collecting and designing of the school motto……are among the major activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Hebei University, and are devoted to with great enthusiasm both by the party committee and all the teaching staff and students. The propaganda bureau under the preparatory committee has twice issued, a notice of collecting them in the form of documents and through the computer network of Hebei University, Both in March and May this year. Within few months, the teachers and students showed great enthusiasm in the activity; they participated in the designing & writing and produced a considerable amount of works. The propaganda bureau under the preparatory committee called several meetings presided over by the responsible leaders of the University to appraise and revise entries form July 6th to August 13th in succession. After repeated screening, revising with collective efforts, and finally discussed and approved by the Party Committee of Hebei University, the first draft was decided.

    In order to make the designs more brilliant with the collective wisdom . all the teachers and students were eager to have their say and they were so meticulous that they would not let one word slip by without careful deliberation. For this and all the other things, we hereby wish to extend our gratitude to those who have supported us all the way through the work.

    On August 2nd, the propaganda bureau briefed on the latest progress in the activity to the preparatory committee which later called a meeting of more than ten experts & scholars who discussed and revised the first draft. Especially for the words of the school song for which quite a few suggestions were made for revision, the experts were called to revise and polish them to match the music time and again before a primary version was decided. Then it was submitted to the standing committee of the Party where it was deliberated and finally passed it.

    After the repeated deliberation of the school leaders and the experts with the enthusiastic participation of the teachers and students, the final version of the school motto, school spirit, school song and school badge is agreed on at last. So we may safely assert that it is the embodiment of democratic centralism and the fruit of collective wisdom. Now, it is officially issued as documents.

    Nearly a hundred experts scholars, school leaders and staff members are engaged in the discussion, appraisal and revision work. Some of the participants are: Han Panshan, Liu Yukan, Du Guichen, Jiao maolin, Han chengwu, all of whom are professors in the College of the Humanities Li Zhengang(the head of the university library, professor) Lv Zhiyi(professor in the College of the Humanities, editor in chief of The History of Hebei University), Yan wutian(associate professor in the College of the Humanities & associate editor in chief of The History of Hebei University) Yang Wenhui (head of the College of Arts, professor ), Zhang Wenchuang (prof. in the College of Arts, co-writer of the school song ), cai Haibo (associate prof. in CA & co-writer of the the school song-.Qi yi (prof. in CA), Li Yanbin (dean of the designing depart CA associate prof.), Peng Bo (lecturer in CA, designer of the school badge), Nie Zhixing(vice ), Wen Qainghua (head of the commission for inspecting discipline of HBU, vice chairman of the preparatory committee ), Gu Feng (co-director of the propaganda Department, chief of the propaganda section under the preparatory committee), Yang Huiliang(vice-head of the Office of Party Committee, vice-chief of the PS under the PC), Zhao xinfeng(vice-secretary of the Youth League), Wang Erjun (News center personnel ).

    Wen Qinghua, Li Zhangang, Jiao Maolin, Zhang Winchuan, Gu Feng and Yang Huliang who have been responsible for the collecting of the entries .are the main contributors to the words of the school song, school motto and school spirit and Finally, we’d like to thank again all the teachers and students who have supported us all the way through the work.
